The
MTSU Art Department offers bachelor’s degrees in four concentrations.
Students can major in: Art Education, Art History, Graphic Design,
and Studio Art. The Art Department also offers minors in these
areas as well.
Art
Education is a Bachelor of Science program designed
for students who wish to teach art in public or private schools.
Students majoring in Art Education will minor in Secondary Education.
All students pursuing a major in Art Education are required
to complete the General Education Studies requirements as specified
by the department and as required for certification. Art Education
students must be admitted to the Teacher Education Licensure
program and have earned a 2.5 GPA or higher.
Art
History
is a Bachelor of Arts program designed for students who wish
to pursue careers in museums, galleries, or art organizations.
Students majoring in Art History may choose concentrations in
Modern and Contemporary, Medieval and Renaissance, and Non-Western;
pre-Columbian, Latin American, African and African American.
Students majoring in Art History must maintain a 2.5 GPA in
the major and complete a senior thesis before graduation.
Graphic
Design
is a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree to prepare students to work
in the commercial or design field. All Graphic Design students
must apply for candidacy and have earned at least a 2.0 GPA
in all university-level course work. A professional portfolio,
which must be reviewed by members of the faculty, is also required.
Studio
Art
is a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in clay, painting, printmaking
or sculpture. This degree prepares students to work as a commercial
artist or designer or advanced study. All studio majors are
required to have a senior exhibition of their artwork.
All
art majors must complete the four foundation courses in Art. They
are: ART 1610 (Two-Dimensional Design), ART 1620 (Drawing I),
ART 1630 (Three-Dimensional Design) and ART 1640 (Drawing II).
All Studio Art and Graphic Design majors must submit a studio
portfolio for review by the Art Faculty after completing the above
courses.
Minors
in Art, Art History, and Art Education are also available.
