Converting Your On-Ground Course to an Online Course

Taking an Online Course through 4 Levels of “Online”-ness to become a Fully Online Course

Curriculum Design Independent Project: Brenda Kerr, Instructional Technology Specialist
Middle Tennessee State University

[ Goals ] [ Objectives ] [ MTSU Support Information ] [ Table of Contents ]

Goals

  • Develop a Course: Develop a series of handouts, an online course, and an on-ground course that lead faculty through the various steps they need to take in moving their courses from fully on-ground to fully online course.

  • Develop media (audio, simulations, etc) that teach course development concepts quickly. (A video can teach a concept quicker than reading a text description of the same process.) [This Goal will be addressed later]

  • Develop this project around the Learning Object Architecture.

  • Emphasize the Student Centered Approach to Course Design: Help faculty design their teaching around concepts rather than covering a huge amount of content. Help faculty design activities that teach students how to figure out the answer by apply previous learning to new situations. (Concentrate on problem solving skills).

Objectives

  • After taking this course faculty will be able to identify and develop web supported courses, web enhanced courses, hybrid/blended courses, and totally online courses.

  • After taking the course faculty will be able to create active learning modules that utilize communication/collaboration, rote-learning, simulation, presentation of new topics, gaming/role playing, and student evaluation tools.

  • After taking the course faculty will be able to create course materials in a variety of formats (or will know who on campus to contact for help in converting course materials) so that they will be accessible to students with a variety of physical and situational disabilities.

  • After taking the course faculty will know how to use MTSU eLearning site license software.
