EducationI am an alumnus of Howard University by way of Sacramento City College. I graduated from Howard with bachelor’s degrees in Political Science and Philosophy. While at Howard, I joined the Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program, and I earned a fellowship from the Ralph Bunche Summer Institute. Both are programs designed to give traditionally disadvantaged students the opportunity to pursue graduate education. Currently, I am a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Political Science at The Ohio State University, where I earned my master’s degree in American Politics with concentrations in racial and ethnic politics, political behavior, and public opinion. I was invited to MTSU as a member of the Geier Pre-Doctoral Fellows Program. Courses
Research InterestsMy long-term research interests include the study of political engagement, a term used to describe a person’s psychological involvement in politics. My dissertation examines the impact of race on interest in politics. Political interest, an important but understudied form of psychological engagement, refers to a person’s desire to “keep up with” or “pay attention to” politics. Specifically, I study whether Blacks and Whites differ meaningfully 1) in the extent to which they express interest in politics, 2) in the factors that shape or determine their political interest, and 3) in the ways that they translate their interest in politics into political action.
