Dedication
liner notes by Dan Pfeifer
I came to MTSU in 1980 to major in Music Industry
and minor in what was then Recording Industry Management. At the
time, the program was a major emphasis within the Department of
Mass Communication with about 150 students. It was located in
the James Union Building and the Haynes House with most classes
in Peck Hall. There were only three faculty, including Geoffrey
Hull and Chris Haseleu. Even though I was a music major, RIM was
the real reason I transferred to MTSU. I always felt more at home
with the RIM folks, both students and faculty. The classes I took
as a minor were arguably the most important to my career. It was
one of the top programs in the country, even for a minor.
In 1991 I had the opportunity to come back to
MTSU and teach in the program. RIM had become a free standing
department and Mass Communication had become its own college.
Today, in 1999, The Department of Recording Industry has over
1300 majors, nineteen full-time faculty, four staff, and a host
of part-timers. The facilities have grown from one studio in the
Haynes House (Home of the Hits), to three studios, three labs,
four classrooms, and a maintenance shop. The name has been shortened
to Recording Industry in order to better represent the technical
side of the program. The Department of Recording Industry is still
top in our field.
Im now in my eighth year as a member of
the faculty and the program is in its twenty fifth year. I feel
I am very lucky to be a part of the programs past, present,
and future. Working on this CD was a very special opportunity
for me. It gave me a chance to rekindle some old memories, reflect
upon all the changes, and think about some old friends. It also
gave me the chance to ponder where we are going. But the neatest
moment in this whole project was when I was again reminded, that
if it werent for Chris and Geoff, this program would not
be what it was, what it is today, or can be tomorrow...the best.
So many people owe so much to these guys...myself included. I
am indeed fortunate to have them as teachers, mentors, colleagues,
and friends. This is dedicated to them. Thanks!

Since 1982, the Department of Recording Industry
has produced seventeen compiliation LP/CDs (see right sidebar).
The music on these discs was produced, recorded and mixed by students
enrolled in engineering, production and MIDI classes in the Department
of Recording Industry. Much of the material was also written and
performed by MTSU students, including many concurrently enrolled
in courses within MTSU's Music Department. Also included are a few
creative projects recently completed by some of the Department of
Recording Industry faculty members.
Retrospective (2000)
showcases some of the best recordings from the first fourteen discs.
Most of these recordings were taken from the original releases in
the digital domain, however some songs were taken from the original
LP release as the masters are no longer available.
