Investigating the Past in a Cross-Curricular Scheme

Hi! I'm Ron Kates, an English Teacher at Middle Tennessee State University, and I have this neat project I'm working on. I have created a class for the Honors program that will enable students to write and think across the curriculum while pursuing a team goal. In the fall of 2000, this class will investigate an aspect of Rutherford County or Murfreesboro history, compile historical facts, complete interviews, and eventually write a collaborative children's novel as the class project. For this first class, I have chosen the setting for the project: the area in and around the confluence of the East and West branches of the Stones River where the towns of Jefferson and Jefferson Springs formerly existed. There is a wealth of information pertaining to these places (and opportunities for interviews that will offer first-hand observation about both locations), and I see this as an exciting investigative opportunity. I will be posting pictures, documents, and observations as I research. If you have any information to share with me, or if you're interested in taking the class (click here for course outline click here to see Honors College guidelines, e-mail me or leave a message at (615) 898-2595.
