SEM 1 Unleashed! 4-26-07

SEM 1Middle Tennessee State University’s Society for Electronic Music completed its most ambitious project yet with the release of their CD, SEM1. Financed by a grant from the school’s Undergraduate Research, Scholarship, and Creative Projects (URSCP) committee, SEM1 features nine original electronic compositions by the group’s officers, the faculty advisor and Ol’Skool. The project’s goal was to give music production students an opportunity to experience the business aspects of creating a finished, ready-to-market CD. URSCP paid for professional mastering, replication, and packaging services for the CD, which is now being given away free by the SEM officers and at local record stores.

In memory of Bob Moog (1934 - 2005)

Dr. Moog

SEM1 is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Robert Moog, who revolutionized popular music by inventing a way to control an electronic sound generator with a piano keyboard in the 1960s. In his honor, SEM featured at least one Moog synthesizer on every track. Some songs feature several Moogs, including the school’s Minimoog Voyager, Memorymoog, and Moog Liberation. The variety of styles on the CD, including dance music, hip hop, and synth pop, showcases the amazing versatility of these instruments. For example, the faculty group Ol’Skool, which is named for its fondness towards vintage gear, uses Moog synthesizers for thick bass lines, mellifluous melodies, and bursts of alien noise, all in one song, “We are Ol’Skool.”
