EXPLORING COLLEGE ACTIVITIES FOR U1010-K

For 1/ 10 of your grade you need to accumulate up to 100 points by choosing from the following activities. All activities must be complete and report submitted prior to the last day of class. However, there are dates listed on the syllabus to indicate with a certain amount of points are due. You will find some suggested activities below. There will be others that you may want to engage in. Ask your instructor if an activity counts for points.Exploring college activities outside class is an important part of university life; therefore, take advantage of them.

Each time you turn in an activity report your should do the following:

Type a one-page response summarizing each activity. The campus event report should include the following:

4. Description of Event: (Go into detail describing the event.)

5. What you liked or disliked about the event or experience? Did you learn anything new?

6. Would your recommend this event to a friend? Why or not?

7. How does attending or participating in this event enhance or detract from your experiences at MTSU?

You should staple your report to the assignment log (attached to end of this page) each time you turn in a new report. Be sure to keep up with your log, as it may be only place you activities are recorded. When you turn in a report, remove previously graded reports.

The points listed are the maximum point value. The assignment must be complete and well done to receive max points.

• Forming Study Group 5 points –This item may be used up to 4 times.Form a study group to study for a major test. To collect points type your report using the form above, but also include: Specifically what the test covered.: (1) Each member of study group, (2)When, (3)Where, and (4) How long and (5) specific strategies used to study.

• Using the Student Handbook of Rights and Responsibilities if Students, Explain what constitutes Academic Misconduct and what penalties could result. 5 points

• Attending Campus Events such as ballgame, club meeting, play, exhibit. Your report should include details that might me useful to other students who would like to participate in such an event. Use the report form above. 5 points for each event may be used 5 times. See examples below

• Attend an Athletic Event
• Intramural Participation at Rec Center
• Climbing Rec Center Rock Wall(Take a picture)
• Attend Honors Lecture Series
• Concert/musical/Theatrical performance at Tucker Theater
• Visit Art Gallery Showing
• Homecoming Activities
• Service Projects with club or organization
• Going to University Writing Lab for help in PH325 and 326
• Going to Math Lab for help SAG 202
• Participating in choral, musical, or theatrical productions at MTSU
• Joining a club or organization and participating in event of it
• Meeting with your advisor in spring for registration of classes
• Meeting with a career counselor to explore career opportunities
• Helping another student with a disability in class or on campus
• Meeting with faculty advisor
• Meeting with college advisor
• Workshop in Internet training
• Tutoring session on campus for specific class

• Chapter 10 Practicing College Learning Strategies. 4^th edition. read entire chapter, turn in summary. 10 points
• Because some classes will have more time than others, your class may not cover Chapter 10 as thoroughly as you need. At any time during the semester you may read the entire chapter and them submit the summary

Type up response of at least ½ -1 page to any of these activities to earn up to 10 points for each event. Use the form above Do not repeat the same event for credit. Turn in throughout the semester.

Other activities will be added throughout the semester or your instructor may have more specific suggestions for things to do to help you acclimate to MTSU and be successful. You may certainly make suggestions for your instructor’s approval.

The FOCUS PORJECT listed below on the Activities List is a two part activity that involves students visiting twice with their advisor. The first visit involves career exploration. The second involves registering for the Spring Semester.

Because all U 1010 classes are participating your section has been assigned a week for each part. It is important that you make your appointments during this week-(not during class.)(I will eventually mark these weeks on the syllabus.)

Part 1Career Exploration Exercise- FOCUS

· FOCUS is a career assessment instrument that will explore your interests, values, personality and various work interests.

· After completing FOCUS you will have some possible career interest to explore further.

Steps to completing FOCUS:

Step 1: You will need to call the Academic Support Center at 898-2339 to schedule an appointment to see an Academic Support Center Advisor.

Please see the chart for your UNIV 1010 section to call and schedule an appointment during that designated week. No makeup appointments will be allowed.

Step 2: You will need to complete the career assessment assignment (FOCUS) BEFORE they meet with their Academic Support Center Advisor (all parts except the “Action Plan”).

Step 2: With the help of an Academic Support Center Advisor you will develop an “action plan” to implement.

Step 3: The FOCUS worksheet will need to be signed and stamped by an Academic Support Center Advisor.

Part 2

Advising Registration Exercise

Print off the worksheet before you begin the Advising/Registration assignment.

· You will need to use the computer and have access to RaiderNet to complete all of the assignment.

· You must make an appointment with your advisor to complete page 1.

· See chart below for your section of UNIV 1010K to call and schedule an appointment to

meet with your advisor for that designated week on the chart.

· Pages 2-8 can be completed by viewing the powerpoint presentation. See below for powerpoint presentation.

· This assignment is worth 20 points.
