Ideas and Activities

This first class meeting is important in order to establish an atmosphere conducive to learning. There will be many who students who do not understand the nature of the Freshmen Studies Program.

Class should include:

1. Overview of course ( what things we will cover, expectations, requirements- including absence policy, grading criteria and materials required) Be sure to include the URL for U101 homepage on the syllabus .

2. Some sort of getting acquainted activity. (If the class is to function as a seminar, getting to know the students and the students getting to know each is importa nt to the success of the course as a whole.)

3. Explain the students will need a Frank account (e-mail account). Students should go the to Office of Information Technology in the basement of Cope. It is free, but students will need to show their ID. Students should have this account before the class scheduled to do this.

(Remind them that first impressions are lasting impressions. Doing homework is not an option; it is a requirement. Points will be taken off for late homework. Rule of thumb for college homework: You can count on two hours o f outside work for every hour of class--and you are responsible for understanding material done outside of class. Chances are class time will not be spent going over homework!)
