{"id":156,"date":"2024-09-23T14:00:26","date_gmt":"2024-09-23T14:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mtsu.edu\/academic-advising\/?page_id=156"},"modified":"2026-04-20T22:58:42","modified_gmt":"2026-04-20T22:58:42","slug":"program-candidacy","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.mtsu.edu\/academic-advising\/program-candidacy\/","title":{"rendered":"Program Candidacy Information"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>All MTSU program majors and minors can be found in the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.mtsu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">catalog<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is always important for students to discuss their specific program requirements with their advisor! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-lightgray-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-lightgray-background-color has-background is-style-wide\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">College of Liberal Arts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-compact-list\">\n<li><strong>Music and Dance<\/strong>: Audition required<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Graphic Design<\/strong>: Completion of 45 hours of coursework, a C or better in certain pre-candidacy classes, an overall GPA of 2.0 or higher, and a portfolio review. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Global Studies<\/strong>: Study Abroad<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Secondary Education minor<\/strong>:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/education.mtsu.edu\/admission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Admission to Teacher Education<\/a>\u00a0with majors in Art Education, English, Foreign Languages (French, German, Spanish), Global Studies and Human Geography, History, Music, Political Science,\u00a0and Theatre.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Theatre:\u00a0<\/strong>For guaranteed admission, must have C or better in all pre-candidacy courses, 30 completed hours of coursework with minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA and 3.5 GPA on all THEA coursework. Limited number of students may be admitted to candidacy on appeal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">College of Education<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>All majors&nbsp;require Teacher Education Program&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/education.mtsu.edu\/admission\/\">candidacy<\/a>&nbsp;and are not competitive.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-compact-list\">\n<li>45 credit hours completed and a 2.75 Inclusive\u00a0GPA<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Satisfactory test scores (Core Academic Skills for Educators tests or ACT-enhanced 21\/SAT 1080)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Met minimum grades for EESE 2010 and 2011 (or transfer equivalent)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cleared background check and disciplinary clearance upon application review<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>3 professional recommendations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Scott Borchetta College of Media and Entertainment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>All majors in the departments of\u00a0Recording Industry (RIM) and most majors in Media Arts require\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mcadvise.mtsu.edu\/candidacy\/\">candidacy<\/a>:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-compact-list\">\n<li><strong>RIM<\/strong>: Competitive and is based upon a candidacy formula; Grade C or better is required in all pre-candidacy courses; a guaranteed candidacy score of 3.5 for Audio Production and 35.5 for Music Business &amp; Commercial Songwriting. Additional students admitted if there is availability.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Media Arts:<\/strong>\u00a0Not competitive. Students must have 36-45 hours completed and B- and C&#8217;s (or higher) in certain pre-candidacy classes. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Animation:<\/strong>\u00a0Currently not competitive. Students must have a pre-candidacy GPA of 2.75 or higher, a C or better in all pre-candidacy courses, and a portfolio review. Guaranteed candidacy granted to students earning a score of 90 or better.\u00a0 Additional students will be admitted if there is availability. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/busadv.mtsu.edu\/admission_policy\">Jones College of Business<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>All majors require <a href=\"https:\/\/busadv.mtsu.edu\/admission_policy\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/busadv.mtsu.edu\/admission_policy\/\">candidacy<\/a> and are not competitive.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-compact-list\">\n<li>Pass required pre-business courses with a 2.25 or higher GPA. Have at least a 2.25 inclusive GPA on all attempted college-level coursework.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>BS Majors:<\/strong>\u00a0Requires 2.0 or higher inclusive GPA<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Business Minors:\u00a0<\/strong>Must complete a coursework application\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/busadv.mtsu.edu\/application-to-take-courses-in-jones-college-of-business\/\">form<\/a>\u00a0before taking any business courses. Only students at junior status with a minimum inclusive GPA of 2.0 are eligible to take 3000-4000 level classes in the Jones College. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/chemistry.mtsu.edu\/pre_prof_index\/\">Pre-Professional Programs<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Very competitive; conditions are program specific.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">College of Behavioral and Health Sciences<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-compact-list\">\n<li><strong>Interior Architecture<\/strong>: 2.5 GPA and C or better in required courses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mtsu.edu\/program\/nursing-b-s-n\/\">Nursing<\/a><\/strong>: Very competitive. 3.0 GPA, 75 score on all HESI exam areas, and B or better in required\u00a0courses, C or better in general education courses.\u00a0<em>Informational sessions are every 1st Friday<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Social Work<\/strong>: Completed 60 credit hours, including True Blue Core requirements, an overall GPA of 2.0, and completion of two pre-social work courses. Application with references and essay judged by Social Work Admissions Committee. Students receiving a score of 85 or higher on the admissions assessment form are guaranteed acceptance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Secondary Education Minor<\/strong>:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cebsadv.mtsu.edu\/Secondar-Education-Minor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Admission to Teacher Education<\/a>\u00a0(EESE 1010 and 1011 not required) with majors in Physical Education.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fashion Studies<\/strong>: C or better in required courses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">College of Basic and Applied Sciences<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-compact-list\">\n<li><strong>Aerospace<\/strong>: Capstone course or internship required.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Aerospace, Professional Pilot<\/strong>: Complete AERO 1010 and AERO 1020 with a minimum grade of B, have at least a second-class FAA medical certificate with third-class privileges.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Aerospace, Unmanned Aircraft Systems<\/strong>: Must complete Private Pilot certification.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mtsu.edu\/mteach\/\">MTeach<\/a>\u00a0Secondary Education minor\u00a0<\/strong>:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cebsadv.mtsu.edu\/Secondar-Education-Minor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Admission to Teacher Education<\/a>\u00a0with majors in Math, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, General Science, Geosciences, Agribusiness, Animal Science, and Plant and Soil Science.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>All MTSU program majors and minors can be found in the&nbsp;catalog.&nbsp; It is always important for students to discuss their specific program requirements with their advisor!
