12 Cubed: A National Exhibition of Small-Scale Works of Art

12 Cubed is a juried exhibition composed of works that do not exceed 12” in any direction. The competition, which originated in 2005, appeals to many artists all across the United States, and has attracted some of the best contemporary art being produced. This year’s competition was juried by former Middle Tennessee State University professor Charles Clary, now Assistant Professor and Foundations Coordinator for Visual Arts at Coastal Carolina University. Previous renditions of the exhibits were juried by such notables as national art critic Dave Hickey and the Frist Center’s Mark Scalia. This edition promises 20 works with something big in small scale for everyone.

This year’s winner is St. Louis, Missouri’s Justin Penov. A work of mixed media, it is entitled “The Dead Room,” Runner up is Joe Krawczyk, a graphic designer from Orlando, Florida with his piece “Deck Chair” which had previously been featured in the Park Gables Gallery in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

Color, Content, and Character: Academic and Self-Taught Perspectives on Art

Color, Content, and Character: Academic and Self-Taught Perspectives in Art is an exhibit displaying the works of self-taught artists from the middle Tennessee area. A notable artist Willard Hill from Manchester, TN. Hill’s work is mostly made using masking tape and other mixed media to display life in his rural community. Hill received his first solo exhibition at the age of 82, and has since been featured in The Good Luck Gallery in Paris and New York. His role as an African American artist was highlighted with his inclusion in Reclamation! Pan-African Works from the Beth Rudin DeWoody Collection, The Taubman Museum of Art, Roanoke, VA. A number of Hill’s works are included in the exhibition. Color, Content, and Character is additionally supported by 16 other artists James Langston, Susan Rodehaver, Samira Hardcastle, Theresa Sifford, Jan Quarles, Justyna Kostkowska, Phyllis Razo, Carol Berning, Carmen Bouldin, Heather McCormick, Leroy Hodges, Diane Stockard, Kay Currie, Mary Watkins, Taryn Simpson, and Mark Jackson.
