Fitness Positions

Employees in the Fitness Department within MTSU Campus Recreation are to assist with the operation and implementation of group fitness classes, personal training programs, wellness events, and nutrition education that is provided for the MTSU community at large. All employees will promote the mission of the Department through example, leadership, and customer service.

Group Fitness Instructor

Job Description

classGroup Fitness Instructors at MTSU are responsible for providing patrons with safe, fun, and effective group fitness programming across various formats. Group Fitness Instructors also work with other departments both within Campus Rec and externally to implement joint health/wellness initiatives for the students, staff, and faculty.

Job Responsibilities

  • Design and implement fitness classes for groups of participants in formats that include yoga, strength, dance, cycling, and cardiovascular exercise
  • Connect with participants attending class to maintain an atmosphere that cultivates long term participation and community
  • Demonstrate safe and effective programming, proper technique, and exercise modifications utilizing verbal and physical cues to enable all members to participate
  • Utilize the appropriate equipment for the specific format and teach safe practices for use
  • Promote group fitness classes and events through social media, class announcements, and around campus community
  • Attend mandatory staff/instructor meetings and trainings
  • Support, participate, and lead additional special events or classes outside of set schedule
  • Model departmental values and expectations

Job Requirements

  • Current MTSU student
  • Current Nationally recognized Fitness Certification or successful completion of our in-house GFIT (Group Fitness Instructor Training) program*
  • Current First Aid/Adult CPR certification or equivalent
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Detail oriented and self-motivated
  • Flexible availability

Personal Trainer

Job Description

Certified Personal Trainers at MTSU help clients clearly identify fitness goals through professional assessment procedures and then guide them toward those goals using a wide variety of training and coaching methods. They work with clients to create individualized plans for achieving their fitness goals and are responsible for leading the clients safely through training sessions and monitoring their progress to make sure they remain injury-free. Our Personal Trainers also work with other departments both within Campus Rec and externally to implement joint health/wellness initiatives for the students, staff, and faculty.

Job Responsibilities

  • Maintaining any applicable Fitness and CPR/First Aid Certifications
  • Prescribing safe, reasonable exercise programs that are tailored to clients’ individual fitness levels
  • Communicating clearly and honestly with clients regarding goals and expectations
  • Communicating clearly with both the Personal Training Manager and Fitness Coordinator regarding work schedules, meetings and trainings, time sheet issues, and any other problems or issues encountered on the job
  • Promoting Personal Training and Joint Programs via social media, class announcements, and on-campus marketing events
  • Maintaining a personal fitness level in order to properly and safely demonstrate exercises to the client and provide safe spotting during sessions
  • Supporting, participating in, and leading additional special events and joint departmental initiatives outside of regular training duties
  • Modelling departmental values and expectations

Job Requirements

  • Current MTSU student
  • Nationally recognized Fitness Certification or successful completion of our in-house PFIT (Personal Fitness Instructor Training) program*
  • Current First Aid/Adult CPR certification or equivalent
  • Excellent customer service skills; Sales experience not required, but is a plus
  • Detail oriented and self-motivated
  • Flexible availability

Fitness Internship

Job Description

The purpose of the Fitness Intern position is to assist with the operation and implementation of group fitness and personal training programs, fitness and wellness events, and services provided by the Fitness Department of Campus Recreation.

Job Responsibilities

  • Work with Fitness Coordinator, Personal Training Manger and Graduate Assistant to manage daily operations of all Fitness programs
  • Assist Personal Trainers with client sessions including shadowing, observing, and assisting with program design.
  • Serve as lead Freshman Fit coordinator including planning and organizing program materials, communicating weekly with participants, and collaborating with Nutrition Team
  • Assist in compiling participation data for necessary reports
  • Assist in hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating all fitness and wellness staff
  • Develop, organize, and manage fitness and wellness special events
  • Research current trends for classes and programs to ensure department meets interests of students and campus community
  • Contribute to department’s marketing and outreach efforts
  • Assist with daily upkeep of fitness facilities including organizing, cleaning, inventory, and maintenance

Job Requirements

  • Current MTSU student
  • Current First Aid/Adult CPR certification or equivalent
