Missed/Cancelled Appointments and Disqualification Policy

Due to high demand and limited availability of appointments, MTSU Counseling Services will now charge a $10 Missed Appointment fee that will be billed directly to the student’s MTSU account. Students can avoid this fee by notifying Counseling Services prior to their scheduled appointment time that they will not be able to attend.

How Do I Cancel My Appointment to Avoid A Fee?

  • Call Counseling Services at (615) 898-2670
  • Reschedule/Cancel in person with the front desk administrator located in KUC, 326-S

We understand unanticipated situations can arise. If you are unable to attend your appointment due to an illness or emergency, please notify MTSU Counseling Services as far in advance as possible, preferably at least 24 hours prior to your appointment. By responsibly rescheduling or canceling your appointment, you give the opportunity for that time to be offered to a fellow student who would benefit from an earlier appointment. Please keep in mind counseling appointments should be viewed as important as any other medical appointment and in order for counseling to be most helpful and effective, consistency and commitment are key.

Disqualification for Services

MTSU Counseling Services may terminate individual and psychiatric services for 365 days when two consecutive appointments are missed during a semester (i.e., not canceled 24 hours prior to the session), or three consecutive appointments are missed over any time frame.  Services may also be terminated if an excessive number of sessions are canceled.

If a disqualification occurs, students may request for one of our counselors to assist them in connecting with alternative on-campus resources or locating a community provider.  Crisis care is always available to any currently enrolled student, even if they have been disqualified from some of our services.  A mental health crisis is any of the following: suicidal or homicidal thoughts or actions, hearing or seeing things other people do not, or a recent sexual assault.  If at any point you are experiencing a mental health crisis, please come directly to our Center and a counselor will meet with you.  We are open Monday – Friday, 8 am – 4:30 pm.  If you are in crisis outside of our normal office hours, please call the Suicide Hotline at 1-800-273-8255, Mobile Crisis at 1-800-704-2651, 911, or go to the nearest hospital ER.
