Comprehension Construction Zone: A Blueprint for Instruction

Designing and delivering informed instruction requires a knowledge of the multidimensional nature of comprehension and the language processes and skills necessary for constructing meaning. It is essential for working with students who experience or who are at risk of experiencing reading difficulties, including students with dyslexia.

The workshop provides a blueprint – a master plan – for helping students acquire and access these essential skills. Participants will explore why and how to use evidence informed strategies for developing vocabulary knowledge, sentence comprehension, use of text structure, background knowledge, and inference making.

Learning Objectives

  • Acknowledge the importance of instruction aligned with the science of reading
  • Recognize the role of teacher knowledge
  • Identify the theoretical models of reading
  • Understand the complexity of comprehension
  • Introduce and connect the blueprint for comprehension to evidence informed instructional approaches and strategies
