Cultural Humility Lab Experience

What is Cultural Humility?

Cultural Humility is the ability to interact, work, and develop meaningful relationships with people of various cultural backgrounds. The road to Cultural Humility requires us to focus on understanding and acknowledging our own cultural values, biases, and attitudes towards cultural differences. Additionally, we must understand cultural practices and worldviews that differ from our own while respectfully interacting with and understanding people from various cultural backgrounds. We use the term Cultural Humility rather than Cultural Competence to honor the lifelong process of self-reflection that is involved in the genuine understanding of cultural differences and goes multiple steps further than simply obtaining knowledge.

On Campus - The Road to Cultural Humility Lab Experiences

Aspects of Culture

During this 45-minute lab, the FJE team will lead participants in engaging discussions surrounding the aspects of culture and how to consider those in the classroom, professional settings, and our personal lives. Culture and You: Aspects of Culture can be tailored to include specific and appropriate topics for your class or organization.

Culture and Identity/Cultural Humility

This advanced 85 minute lab builds upon foundational knowledge surrounding the aspects of culture. During this experience, the FJE team will lead participants in the exploration of their personal aspects of culture related to their own identities. Participants will create a personalized action plan focused on ways to implement anti-racist and social justice practices in their personal and professional lives. It will also include a lesson on Cultural Humility which will lead participants in discussions surrounding inclusive and equitable practices when preparing syllabi, curriculum, and learning resources. Considerations of inclusive language, teaching, and communication will be the highlight of this hands-on and discussion-based workshop.
