{"id":157,"date":"2024-09-19T16:56:13","date_gmt":"2024-09-19T16:56:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mtsu.edu\/irb\/?page_id=157"},"modified":"2026-04-12T23:37:35","modified_gmt":"2026-04-12T23:37:35","slug":"onlinedatacollection","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.mtsu.edu\/irb\/onlinedatacollection\/","title":{"rendered":"Collection of Data over the Internet"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Purpose<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The purpose of this webpage is to provide additional clarity on the MTSU IRB\u2019s requirement for allowing data collection over the internet.\u00a0Please ensure that the following conditions, but not limited to, are taken care of before you make a request for online intervention.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Basic&nbsp;Conditions for Web-based Surveys<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The study must be conducted such that there is minimal risk or lower than minimal risk for the participants.\u00a0 Any responses that would reveal the identity of the participant would have to be justified adequately.\u00a0 Sensitive information being collected over the internet is highly discouraged unless the PI can demonstrate that such information can be protected. The online surveys must follow the two basic requirements listed below:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Informed Consent:\u00a0<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The first page of the online study must contain the approved informed consent text.\u00a0 The IRB gives freedom on the formatting as long as the text is legible, and important disclosures are adequately highlighted.\u00a0 The participant must be given a chance to either accept or decline with distinct responses.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2.
