Grammar got ya down? Frustrated with the quality of student writing? Worried that students aren’t as articulate as previous generations? Consider attending this workshop led by Dr. Julie Myatt Barger and Dr. Kate Pantelides, Co-Directors of General Education English, to address pedagogical approaches to these concerns. This workshop will identify challenges student writers face in writing for different disciplines before discussing the value of frequent informal writings to promote student engagement and understanding. Informed by Writing Studies research, this presentation offers examples of writing prompts and assignments that can deepen class discussion, help students draw connections between course material and other knowledge/experiences, etc. Helping students improve as writers need not be a hopeless endeavor, but it might require shifting our expectations.
