US Army Staff Sergeant Robert Fry was born on 18 July 1917 in Gallatin, TN. He attended Dupont High School in Old Hickory, TN in 1937, where he was named all-city guard on the football team. He was known as “Polly.” Fry attended Middle Tennessee State College where he played college football. He entered the US Army in 1941 and became a flight engineer instructor at Barksdale Field (now Air Force Base) Louisiana. He died on 3 April 1943 during training maneuvers when his plane crashed 2 miles from Barksdale. SSG Fry was assigned to the 474th Bomb Squadron, 335th Bomb Group. The B-26 (aircraft # 40-1548) was piloted by 2LT Dwight Corrier. SSG Fry was a flight engineer instructor. The 335th Bomb Group mission was to train B-26 crews destined for war in Europe, Middle East, or Pacific Theaters. The B-26 had a crew of seven. SSGT Fry was laid to rest at Spring Hill Cemetery, Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee, USA. He was 25 years of sage.
