Bill\u00ae&nbsp;Benefit(s) that you qualify for and that are best suited for your needs. Start by completing the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gibill.va.gov\/GI_Bill_Info\/CH33\/step-by-step.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">What Benefit is Best for Me?<\/a>&nbsp;tutorial, then apply online for your&nbsp;GI Bill\u00ae&nbsp;benefits. Only active duty service performed after September 10, 2001 may be considered for determining eligibility for this new benefit. A service member or veteran must have served at least 90 aggregate days on active duty to be eligible. However, individuals honorably discharged for a service-connected disability who served 30 continuous days after September 10, 2001 may also establish eligibility. Click&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vets.gov\/\">here<\/a>&nbsp;for more information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<strong>Post &#8211;<\/strong>&nbsp;9\/11<strong>&nbsp;Veterans Educational Assistance Improvements Act of 2010<\/strong>&nbsp;(Public Law 111-377) changes the amount of tuition and fee charges that should be reported to the VA by MTSU.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mtsu-blocks-expandable-item accordion-item expandable-heading expandable-heading-lightblock\"><h2 class=\"accordion-header\" id=\"headingpost-9-11-gi-bill-chapter-33-dependent-transfer-of-eligible-service\"><button class=\"accordion-button collapsed\" type=\"button\" data-bs-toggle=\"collapse\" data-bs-target=\"#collapseoverviewsubpost-9-11-gi-bill-chapter-33-dependent-transfer-of-eligible-service\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"collapseoverviewsubpost-9-11-gi-bill-chapter-33-dependent-transfer-of-eligible-service\">Post &#8211; 9\/11\u00a0GI Bill\u00ae\u00a0(Chapter 33 Dependent)\u00a0Transfer of Eligible Service<\/button><\/h2><div id=\"collapseoverviewsubpost-9-11-gi-bill-chapter-33-dependent-transfer-of-eligible-service\" class=\"accordion-collapse collapse expandable-content expandable-content-lightblock\" aria-labelledby=\"headingpost-9-11-gi-bill-chapter-33-dependent-transfer-of-eligible-service\" data-bs-parent=\"#overviewsub\"><div class=\"accordion-body\">\n<p>Eligible Chapter 33 Post 9\/11 Service Members may transfer their unused&nbsp;GI Bill\u00ae&nbsp;benefits to their spouse and\/or children.&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vets.gov\/\">Here<\/a> is the website and the steps involved in transferring those benefits:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list is-style-compact-list\">\n<li>The service member will need to go through their command section and request the benefits transfer to their spouse\/children before getting out of the military. Once approved, DOD will send the service member a Transfer of Eligibility (TEB) confirmation letter. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">Once the TEB is obtained, the dependent will need to go to the VA website at&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.va.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">www.va.gov,<\/a>&nbsp; go to education benefits, and go through the application process.  They will ask for your banking information for deposits. <\/span>Complete the form and submit it online. Once it&#8217;s been submitted online, you will receive a confirmation email.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You will then receive a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) in the mail; you can then bring a copy to our office, or submit it in the Secure drop on our website mtsu.edu\\\/military.  We will then request that the dependent complete the local MTSU forms in order to be certified for the&nbsp;GI Bill\u00ae<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It normally takes the VA Regional Office 6 &#8211; 8 weeks to process this paperwork.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mtsu-blocks-expandable-item accordion-item expandable-heading expandable-heading-lightblock\"><h2 class=\"accordion-header\" id=\"headingdependents-educational-assistance-program-chapter-35\"><button class=\"accordion-button collapsed\" type=\"button\" data-bs-toggle=\"collapse\" data-bs-target=\"#collapseoverviewsubdependents-educational-assistance-program-chapter-35\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"collapseoverviewsubdependents-educational-assistance-program-chapter-35\">Dependents Educational Assistance Program\u00a0(Chapter 35)<\/button><\/h2><div id=\"collapseoverviewsubdependents-educational-assistance-program-chapter-35\" class=\"accordion-collapse collapse expandable-content expandable-content-lightblock\" aria-labelledby=\"headingdependents-educational-assistance-program-chapter-35\" data-bs-parent=\"#overviewsub\"><div class=\"accordion-body\">\n<p>A spouse or child of a service-connected deceased or 100-percent-permanently disabled service-connected veteran may be eligible for VA educational assistance. The marital status of a dependent child is not a factor in determining eligibility. Benefits may be used until the dependent has reached the age of twenty-six or for eight years from the date that eligibility is determined, whichever is later. The service person must have participated in the pay reduction program. The monthly payment rate will vary with the length and type of service. Members are eligible for this benefit for up to 10 years from their date of separation from the military. Monthly WAVE verification is required to ensure monthly benefit payments. You should allow the VA Regional Office six to eight weeks to process any change in your claim; however, this processing time may vary according to the particular term you&#8217;re attending. Also be aware that the amount of VA funding that you receive may not cover all tuition and related fees for the courses in which you enroll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Prevent Overpayment&nbsp;and Penalties<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>An overpayment is an incorrect benefit payment that is more than the amount to which you are entitled. If you promptly notify the MTSU Veterans Affairs Office of changes affecting your benefits (such as dropping a class or withdrawing from school), you can prevent or reduce overpayments.<br><br>In addition, you should use reasonable judgment. Carefully read all letters from the VA about the monthly rate and effective dates of your benefits. If you think a VA payment is incorrect, contact the VA Regional Office at 1-888-442-4551.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mtsu-blocks-expandable-item accordion-item expandable-heading expandable-heading-lightblock\"><h2 class=\"accordion-header\" id=\"headinggeneral-guidelines-to-follow-once-you-have-enrolled\"><button class=\"accordion-button collapsed\" type=\"button\" data-bs-toggle=\"collapse\" data-bs-target=\"#collapseoverviewblock2general-guidelines-to-follow-once-you-have-enrolled\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"collapseoverviewblock2general-guidelines-to-follow-once-you-have-enrolled\">General Guidelines to Follow Once You Have Enrolled<\/button><\/h2><div id=\"collapseoverviewblock2general-guidelines-to-follow-once-you-have-enrolled\" class=\"accordion-collapse collapse expandable-content expandable-content-lightblock\" aria-labelledby=\"headinggeneral-guidelines-to-follow-once-you-have-enrolled\" data-bs-parent=\"#overviewblock2\"><div class=\"accordion-body\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-compact-list\">\n<li>VA benefits are based on the number of certified credit hours a student is registered for and attending.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In order to receive your full housing allowance, you must be attending full-time and taking at least one on-campus course each term.&nbsp;&nbsp;WARNING to students participating in ACCELERATED CLASSES: Once your accelerated class is complete, that class&nbsp;no longer counts in the number of hours you are currently attempting.&nbsp; This change could impact your rate of pursuit and ultimately your BAH.&nbsp; If the&nbsp;accelerated class is the&nbsp;only on-campus course you take, this too will affect&nbsp;BAH. &nbsp;(There are special conditions for Summer School and full housing allowance.&nbsp; Please see the Daniels Center staff to discuss.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>VA will not pay for any courses for which you have previously been given credit through military service.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You must submit the member 4 copy of your DD FORM 214 and your JST for evaluation to the&nbsp; MTSU&nbsp;Transition Manager by the end of the first semester of attending MTSU (Airforce service members\/veterans will not have a JST. CCAF transcripts are to be sent to Admissions at time of application, as they are considered official transcripts).&nbsp; You will receive up to 8 credit hours of electives (PE and Military Science) for your DD FORM 214, plus any other credits that you may receive from your JST or CCAF Transcript. If you are working toward two different degrees and\/or programs at the same time, you must choose which one will be your primary program to be reported to the VA.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp;Every semester, you must work with your academic advisor to ensure you are registered only for classes needed for your major and or minor.&nbsp; Your advisor will upload eligible classes into the system for the Daniels Center to review.&nbsp; You will have a registration hold on your account until you have&nbsp;done this.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp;VA will only pay for courses&nbsp;<em>required<\/em>&nbsp;for your major or minor. Any changes to your major, minor, or class schedule&nbsp;<em>must<\/em>&nbsp;be reported to the MTSU Daniels Center and your advisor.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You must notify the MTSU&nbsp;Daniels&nbsp;Center immediately of any changes in registration or class attendance that may affect your status as a full or part-time student.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dropping classes can result in a debt to the VA. (NOTE: The university collects these debts for the VA.\u00a0 Consequently, there is no payment plan.\u00a0 These debts will need to be repaid before the next semester.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Additionally, certain courses (such as, ECE 4100, ENGL 1008, 1009, 1010, 1020, READ 1000, and MATH 990) award a grade of an &#8220;N&#8221; if a student hasn&#8217;t earned the minimum grade required for the course. Since MTSU Academic Regulations consider a grade of &#8220;N&#8221; to be a non-punitive grade, and the Dept. of Veteran Affairs Rules &amp; Regulations state that a student cannot be paid for a non-punitive grade including &#8220;W&#8221; &amp; &#8220;WD&#8221;, if you receive a non-punitive grade in a course, you could incur an overpayment in which you will have to repay the VA.\u00a0 (NOTE: The university collects these debts for the VA.\u00a0 Consequently, there is no payment plan.\u00a0 These debts will need to be repaid before the next semester.\u00a0 \u00a0 A non-punitive grade is any grade assigned that excludes the course from consideration in determining fulfillment of requirements toward graduation.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Similarly, if you are administratively withdrawn or stop attending without officially withdrawing, the Daniels Center is required to report your last day of attendance to the VA. This could result in an overpayment in which you will have to repay the VA. (NOTE: The university collects these debts for the VA.\u00a0 Consequently, there is no payment plan.\u00a0 These debts will need to be repaid before the next semester.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Completing a term with all Fs and\/or non-punitive grades could result in an overpayment, which you will have to repay the VA.
