Biography

Chip Henderson has been regularly performing in musical settings ranging from traditional Dixieland to chamber orchestras since the mid 1990's. Chip Henderson has been regularly performing in musical settings ranging from traditional Dixieland to chamber orchestras since the mid 1990's. In that time he has performed formally and informally with notable musicians such as Marvin Stamm, Donald Brown, Ron Eschete, Mundell Lowe, Howard Alden, and Peter Bernstein.

Aside from performing with various small jazz groups and big bands in the Memphis/ Nashville metropolitan areas, he has appeared numerous times with the Jazz Orchestra of the Delta, the IRIS Chamber Orchestra, the Memphis Symphony, the Nashville Symphony, the Jackson Symphony (TN), the Knoxville Symphony, and the Murfreesboro Symphony.  His ability to double on a variety stringed instruments has allowed Chip to work with the national touring companies of ChicagoMonty Python's Spam-a-LotThe Lion King, High School Musical, 9 To 5Shrek: The Musical, The Addams FamilyAnything Goes, Motown, and many others.

In 2009 Chip began to work as a freelance arranger for Hal Leonard Publishing and has arranged fourteen books for their Essential Elelments Guitar Ensemble series and two for their Jazz Guitar Chord Melody series. In 2016 Alfred Publishing released a book of transcriptions by Chip that focused on the soloing style of swing era guitarist Charlie Christian. The release of this book led to an invitation to perform for Christian's induction into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 2018.  

Chip is a graduate of the University of Memphis with a Bachelor of Music (1997) and a Master of Music (2002) in Jazz Guitar Performance.  During his time at the Univ. of Memphis, he studied privately with former Count Basie guitarist Charlton Johnson as well as studying occasionally with jazz guitar great Calvin Newborn.

A faculty member at MTSU since 2014, Chip teaches applied jazz guitar lessons and directs the jazz guitar ensemble.
