{"id":9,"date":"2024-09-06T13:47:43","date_gmt":"2024-09-06T13:47:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mtsu.edu\/nsse\/?page_id=9"},"modified":"2026-08-28T16:07:23","modified_gmt":"2026-08-28T16:07:23","slug":"target-population","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.mtsu.edu\/nsse\/target-population\/","title":{"rendered":"Target Population"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NSSE is designed to capture the experiences of&nbsp;all<strong><em>&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>bachelor&#8217;s&nbsp;<em>degree-seeking<\/em>&nbsp;<em>students<\/em>&nbsp;classified as first-year students or graduating seniors,&nbsp;<strong>not&nbsp;<\/strong>only full-time students in the traditional 18- to 24-year-old age range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"is-style-compact-list wp-block-list\">\n<li>Traditional age students and adult learners<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Full-time and part-time students<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Commuters and on-campus residents<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Distance education and online students<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students from all campuses and institutions sharing the same IPEDS number\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Excluded groups<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"is-style-compact-list wp-block-list\">\n<li>Students enrolled in professional programs such as\u00a0pharmacy,\u00a0occupational therapy,\u00a0physical\u00a0therapy,\u00a0etc., that\u00a0terminate as master&#8217;s or doctoral degrees without earning a bachelor&#8217;s degree along the way.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students on branch campuses associated with a different IPEDS number<em>.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">First-Year Students (further defined):<em>&nbsp;<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The required first-year student population is intentionally broader than the first-time, first-year student definition used on some campuses. Include all students classified as first-year students according to cumulative credit hours earned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"is-style-compact-list wp-block-list\">\n<li>All students must be (a) enrolled in the fall 2023 semester and (b) expected to be classified as first-year students in spring 2024 according to the Institution&#8217;s official records.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Included are any fall 2023 credit hours being attempted or earned, and (<em>when possible<\/em>) Advanced Placement (AP) credits while other college credits earned prior to completing high school are excluded from calculations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Seniors\u00a0(further defined)\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Senior students (i.e., those in the final year before degree) must be (a) enrolled during fall 2023 and (b) considered a probable graduate for spring or summer 2024.
