{"id":273,"date":"2024-07-17T19:27:02","date_gmt":"2024-07-17T19:27:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mtsu.edu\/policies\/?page_id=273"},"modified":"2026-04-15T15:23:47","modified_gmt":"2026-04-15T15:23:47","slug":"p803","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.mtsu.edu\/policies\/p803\/","title":{"rendered":"803 \u00a0Holiday, Administrative, and Emergency Closings"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Approved by President<\/strong><strong><br>Effective Date: December 6, 2024<br>Responsible Division: Business and Finance<br>Responsible Office: &nbsp;Human Resource Services<br>Responsible Officer: &nbsp;Assistant Vice President, Human Resource Services<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I. &nbsp;Purpose<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This policy outlines the holidays and administrative closings of Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU or University) and describes the emergency closing procedure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>II. &nbsp;Holidays Observed<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MTSU will observe a maximum of eight (8) holidays per year.&nbsp; The following days shall be designated as official holidays during which offices will be closed and no classes will be held:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:upper-alpha\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>New Year\u2019s Day<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Martin Luther King, Jr. Day<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Memorial Day<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Juneteenth<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Independence Day<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Labor Day<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Thanksgiving Day<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Christmas Day<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>MTSU shall hold observances for Veterans Day on or near the days recognized as a national day of observance.&nbsp; Offices will be open during regular business hours and classes will be held as scheduled.&nbsp; Students, faculty, and staff who are veterans shall be afforded the opportunity to participate in the campus observances without adverse action or absence. T.C.A. \u00a7 49-7-160. MTSU shall allow a veteran to have the entirety of November 11, Veterans&#8217; Day, as a non-paid holiday if they meet the requirements of T.C.A. \u00a7 15-1-105.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>III<\/strong>.<strong>&nbsp;Administrative Closings<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the designated holidays, administrative closing days shall be designated each year by the\u00a0President as administrative closings. During this time, regular employees in an active pay status will be granted time off from work with compensation. \u00a0Administrative closing days will be included in the annual holiday schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:upper-roman\" class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>IV.&nbsp; Weekend Holiday Pay<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When a recognized holiday falls on Saturday, the Friday preceding the holiday shall be substituted. This includes New Year\u2019s Day and can result in December 31<sup>st<\/sup>&nbsp;of the previous calendar year being substituted. When a recognized holiday falls on Sunday, the Monday following the holiday shall be substituted.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where work schedules or duties make it necessary for an employee to work on a holiday, a corresponding amount of time off shall be granted. The following provisions apply:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:upper-alpha\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Classified Employees. The employee will receive regular holiday pay for the day and will be compensated at a time and one-half time rate for the hours worked on the holiday. See&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mtsu.edu\/policies\/p802\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"272\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Policy 802 Hours of Work<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Administrative Employees. When work schedules or duties make it necessary for an administrative employee to work on a holiday, a corresponding amount of time off shall be granted.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>V. &nbsp;Holiday Pay Restrictions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All regular full-time and part-time employees in an active pay status will qualify for holiday pay for the days listed above during which time offices are closed. Regular part-time employees will receive the holiday benefit on a pro rata basis. The following provisions apply:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:upper-alpha\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Employees who are in an active pay status on the work days immediately preceding and following a holiday will receive payment for the holiday.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any holiday falling within a period of an employee\u2019s sick, annual, or other leave with pay shall be considered holiday leave and recorded as such.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>VI. &nbsp;Emergency Closing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At times it may be necessary for the President to declare specific hours as emergency closing as the result of inclement weather or other emergency situations. In such cases, regular full-time and part-time employees on the active payroll who are scheduled to work during the declared times of closing will be granted time off from work with pay.
