As such, a concerted effort is being expended on increasing our level of extramural funding for research, scholarship, and creative projects. Grant Forward
MTSU has an institutional subscription to GrantForward, a database of funding opportunities. Anyone with an MTSU email address can create an account. The system allows individuals to use automation (by uploading CVs or online publication lists) to create researcher profiles. Users can also manually add additional interests to their profile. By creating a saved search, users can automatically receive emails notifications of funding opportunities on a daily or weekly basis. A searchable, continuously updated, database of funding opportunities in biomedical research and science education. It contains programs that offer training and research funding for graduate and medical students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty, as well as programs in science, math, engineering, and technology for undergraduate faculty and students. National Institutes of Health
Composed of 27 Institutes and Centers, the NIH provides leadership and financial support to researchers in every state and throughout the world. Helping to lead the way toward important medical discoveries that improve people's health and save lives, NIH scientists investigate ways to prevent disease as well as the causes, treatments, and even cures for common and rare diseases.
National Science Foundation
The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency created by Congress in 1950 "to promote the progress of science; to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare; to secure the national defense…" With an annual budget of about $5.5 billion, we are the funding source for approximately 20 percent of all federally supported basic research conducted by America's colleges and universities. In many fields such as mathematics, computer science and the social sciences, NSF is the major source of federal backing. Department of Defense
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)
is the central research and development organization for the Department of Defense
(DoD). It manages and directs selected basic and applied research and development
projects for DoD, and pursues research and technology where risk and payoff are both
very high and where success may provide dramatic advances for traditional military
roles and missions.
Department of Energy
The Department of Energy is the single largest Federal government supporter of basic research in the physical sciences in the United States, providing more than 40 percent of total Federal funding for this vital area of national importance. It oversees, and is the principal Federal funding agency of, the Nation's research programs in high-energy physics, nuclear physics, and fusion energy sciences. Such a diverse research portfolio supports tens of thousands of principal investigators, post-doctoral students, and graduate students who are tackling some of the most challenging scientific questions of our era.
Environmental Protection Agency
EPA is tasked with the mission to protect human health and the environment. Since 1970, EPA has been working for a cleaner, healthier environment for the American people. Under the tutelage of the Office of Grants and Debarment, between 40 and 50 percent of EPA's enacted budgets have provided direct support through grants to State environmental programs. EPA grants to States, non-profits and educational institutions support high-quality research that will improve the scientific basis for decisions on national environmental issues and help EPA achieve its goals.
Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE)
Hundreds of fellowship and research participation opportunities at federal research facilities for faculty, postgraduates, graduates, and undergraduates. These programs are administered by ORISE for the U.S. Department of Energy and other federal agencies.
