The messages stand in stark contrast to the stereotypes that exist about college student behavior, which are frequently exploited in movies like Neighbors, Old School, and Animal House. However, our statistics are supported by multiple national research studies which consistently document a large gap between what students perceive to be reality in terms of substance use and other unhealthy behaviors by their peers and what is actually the reality based on reported use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both of our assessments, which collected data from over 1600 randomly selected students, were web-based, confidential and voluntary to best minimize self-report bias. Additionally, the demographics of students who responded to the survey are quite similar to the demographics of the overall student population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While many alcohol, drug, and other prevention efforts have negative undertones, using scare tactics and extreme examples, social norms campaigns stick to the positive. The True Blue Health: Revisiting Reality campaign is designed to recognize the many students who are already making responsible choices when it comes to their personal health. At the same time, it informs students who may not currently be making responsible choices that their experiences are not indicative of the \u201ctrue\u201d MTSU college experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This project is funded under a grant contract with the State of Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Data<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Data for the True Blue Health campaign come from two surveys conducted in 2015 and 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the spring of 2015, 920 randomly selected students completed the Core Drug and Alcohol Survey.&nbsp; The survey was web-based, allowing respondents to complete the assessment in the privacy of their own rooms and on their own computers.&nbsp; Participation was voluntary, and respondents could leave blank any question with which they were uncomfortable answering.&nbsp; No names were ever attached to the survey data.&nbsp; When the survey closed, the demographics of participants were very similar to the demographics of the school.&nbsp; Here\u2019s a breakdown of the demographics of Core Survey participants:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-compact-list\">\n<li>28.8% were freshmen<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>21.2%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>22.5% were juniors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>26.7% were seniors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>82.3% lived off campus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>78.3% were between ages 18-22&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the spring of 2016, 685 randomly selected students completed the National College Health Assessment.&nbsp; This survey was also web-based, confidential, and voluntary.&nbsp; Once again, the demographics of survey respondents were similar to the university\u2019s demographics.&nbsp; The breakdown is as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-compact-list\">\n<li>26.7% were first year undergraduates<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>19.9% were second year undergraduates<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>22.6% were third year undergraduates<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>23.8% were fourth year or more undergraduates<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>75.1% lived off campus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>77.3% were between the ages of 18-24&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<script>\nvar
