Biochemistry
Biochemistry provides a unique blend of biology and chemistry. Gain skills for diverse fields, from health professions to biotech.
Biochemistry, B.S.
Biochem is the best of both worlds! It allows a student to combine knowledge of both chemistry and biology of life processes at the molecular level.
At MTSU, you'll build a strong background in the traditional areas of chemistry that overlap with molecular biology — organic and biochemistry, along with the more quantitative areas of analytical, and physical chemistry. A degree in biochemistry prepares students to think critically and creatively as effective problem solvers. Biochem graduates can continue on to graduate or professional school or find immediate employment in a wide variety of high-demand fields. These fields include health professions (e.g. medical, dental, pharmacy), pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry; or biomedical testing.
MTSU’s B.S. in Biochemistry is accredited by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB).

Drawing on Personal Battle: Honors student uses cancer diagnosis and treatment to educate others
When he was a 17-year-old high school student, Elijah Blank learned that he had acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). After receiving that diagnosis Dec. 23, 2021, he missed attending several months of his junior year in person while receiving homebound care. “It was weird going back to class,” he recalled. “I felt like a dead man [ Read More ]

The Biochemistry program allows a student to combine knowledge of both biology and chemistry to explain life processes in terms of chemical reactions with living cells. A Biochemistry degree can not only prepare students for professional careers as chemists; it may also serve as the basis for work in areas outside pure chemistry, such as materials science, medicine and other health-related fields, nutrition, pharmacology, patent law, business, and environmental science, to name a few.
