Curriculum and Instruction, Secondary Education Licensure Path Concentration, M.Ed.

This innovative program prepares graduate students to meet the State of Tennessee initial licensure requirements in secondary and K-12 education while pursuing a Master’s degree. There are two paths – traditional teacher training and job-embedded teaching. Both are focused upon best practices in education as well as the latest developments in learning theory and research. Built around the concepts of “high tech and high touch,” the program provides exceptional convenience for those students who prefer online and hybrid classes with a personal approach.

The program employs problem-based learning in combination with professional learning communities, an approach that focuses attention on current realities inherent in the world of teaching. Through this singular training method, graduate students learn specific, dynamic teaching techniques to focus on student success while working with others in a professional learning community setting. Students are trained in practices fundamental to their success as a Secondary or K-12 teacher, including effective planning, assessment, instructional strategies, and classroom management. Further, graduates are prepared to engage in research practices that are meaningful and useful to their own professional application. Our commitment is to encourage the effective growth of our students and to support them as they prepare to be dynamic and competent professionals.

Professional Licensure Disclosure

MTSU discloses that the Master of Education (MED) in Curriculum and Instruction, Secondary Education Licensure Path is a teacher licensure preparation program accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and approved by the Tennessee Department of Education. Admission to a teacher licensure preparation program does not guarantee that students will obtain a teacher license. Successful completion of this program meets the educational requirements to apply for a practitioner teacher licensure in Tennessee.

The MED Curriculum and Instruction, Secondary Education Licensure Path disclosure provided on MTSU’s professional licensure disclosure website indicates the states and territories where MTSU has determined, through reasonable and good faith effort, that the program does or does not meet the educational requirements for other US states and territories. Licensing authorities for each state set and enforce their own requirements and standards, which are subject to change. Current and prospective students not located in Tennessee or who plan to seek licensure or certification outside the state of Tennessee should contact the appropriate state licensing agency or board and discuss their plans with an advisor and the MTSU Office of Teacher Licensure before enrolling in the program to ensure they have the most up-to-date information and guidance regarding licensure requirements.
