MTSU Police Officers

University Police Officers work to provide safety and security for Middle Tennessee State University students, faculty, staff, and visitors. As the most visible portion of the university's safety initiatives, University Police Officers patrol the campus and answer calls for service on foot, in cars and on bicycles twenty-four (24) hours a day. University Police Officers interact with community members on a daily basis in order to establish collaborative partnerships focused on the protection and safety of the university community. Successful candidates are expected to have a dedication to service, and a commitment to the department's mission to provide a safe learning, teaching, and working environment to a diverse university community. As a full-service police department, officers are required to obtain, possess, and/or maintain a Tennessee Peace Officer Certification, qualify, and carry firearms. All training and equipment will be provided by the department to successful candidates.

Minimum Requirements to become an MTSU Police Officer:

      • Age: At least eighteen (18) years of age for law enforcement officer (twenty-one (21) or over is preferred)
      • Education: High School Diploma or G.E.D.
      • Citizenship: US Citizen
      • Other Requirements:
        • No felony conviction or to any violation of any federal or state laws relating to force, violence, theft, dishonesty, gambling, liquor, or controlled substances.
        • Honorable discharge from any of the armed forces of the United States if applicable.
        • Be of good moral character as determined by a thorough background examination.
        • Pass physical examination by a licensed physician.
        • Pass psychiatric or psychological examination by a Tennessee Licensed Health Care Provider.

Emergency Communications Specialists

The Emergency Communications Specialist (ECS) is the first link in the emergency response chain. The ECS answers and prioritizes incoming emergency and non-emergency phone calls from the campus community and general public requesting assistance or information. As a result, the ECS is required to listen and process information quickly, assign available police resources, and provide assistance to callers and gather facts and information for responding officers. ECS personnel must quickly determine the necessary resources and provide information to responding emergency personnel (police/fire/EMS) to ensure an appropriate and timely response. The ECS must be capable of performing job functions during periods of stress and have the ability to function independently or conjunction with other Communications personnel. Calls for assistance must be answered calmly and the ECS must handle emergency situations dispassionately and logically to communicate effectively with the public and first responders.

Part-Time/Student Employment Opportunities:

Student Dispatch:  This position works alongside our Emergency Communication Specialist to supplement our ability to serve the campus community and promote a safe environment. Scheduling for this position is flexible since Communications operates twenty-four (24) hours a day. It is a part-time position that may work up to twenty-four (24) hours per week.

Raider Patrol: This is a student position responsible for providing building lock-up services, safety escorts, and serve as an extra set of “eyes and ears” to promote a safe environment at MTSU. These individuals work during the evening hours. It is a part-time position that may work up to twenty-four (24) hours per week.
