Hugh Moffatt is a Nashville based teacher, songwriter, and dramatic writer. The list of artists who have recorded his songs includes Jerry Lee Lewis, Merle Haggard, Ronnie Milsap, Alabama, Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, and Kesha plus many others from all styles of music. Among his most recorded songs are “Old Flames Can’t Hold a Candle to You” (w/Pebe Sebert), “Carolina Star”, and “Rose of My Heart”. As a recording artist, he has released eleven albums and toured extensively around the world.

In collaboration with composer Michael Ching, Moffatt wrote the librettos for three operas each of which have had multiple productions. Ching and Moffatt also collaborated on a new English translation of Gluck’s ORFEO ed EURIDICE, premiered by Opera Memphis in 2010. They are currently developing a fourth original opera.

Four of Moffatt’s short plays premiered in Nashville as part of the Pulp Friction 10-minute Play Festival, which he produced for three years. His one-hour dramatic TV series pilot, The Ryman, was a semi-finalist in the 2017 Screencraft Screenwriting Fellowship contest.

Moffatt loves teaching. He taught at the Montessori elementary level early on and has taught Songwriting and the Business of Music for years at the college level. He is proud to join the staff at MTSU this year. He believes strongly in the power of the technical craft of writing to lift up the heart and soul of a writer to the appreciation of the world for the benefit of every one of us.

Hugh Moffatt has a B.A. in English from Rice University and an M.F.A. in Writing (Playwriting and Screenwriting) from Spalding University’s Low Residency Program. He is the brother of singer-songwriter Katy Moffatt.
