From Principles to Practice: Experiential Education (EXL) Incorporating High Impact Practices into Academic Courses

Lead faculty members of the EXL Scholars Program will share an overview of the award winning experiential learning program at MTSU with a focus on course development, student interest, and several assignments unique to the EXL Scholars Program.  Faculty members will share their expertise regarding methods for incorporating experiential learning into academic courses, how to locate and foster community partnerships, and how to evaluate the students on the learning outcomes. Assessment indicates such assignments contribute dramatically to student engagement and retention.  As EXL faculty members and graduates of the Experiential Education Academy, the presenters will also highlight the connections between the National Society for Experiential Education’s Eight Principles of Good Practice and several High-Impact Learning Experiences at MTSU.  We hope to see you there.

From Principles to Practice: Designing High Impact Assignments

Dr. Janet McCormick will give an overview of the Organizational Communication major highlighting courses, assignments and activities designated as EXL since 2006!  Examples include event planning, interviewing, training and development, communication auditing/consulting and much more! Organizational Communication faculty are well known on this campus for inspiring students to make connections between theory and practical application by creating  meaningful opportunities for hands on learning and building  partnerships throughout the community.  Dr. McCormick was the first MTSU faculty member to graduate from the Experiential Learning Academy and has earned numerous teaching awards in her 30 year teaching career including the recent 2017 Outstanding Teacher Award.

Building A Real World Experience for Songwriting and Audio Engineering Students

Odie Blackmon describes how he built the Songwriting Practicum to give his students the opportunity to work with hit songwriters, hit music publishers, hit music producers, and A-list session musicians in collaboration with Master of Fine Arts Audio Engineering students at a famous recording studio in Nashville.  In addition, you will learn how he has incorporated service learning activities and civic engagement into his songwriting courses. Mr. Blackmon serves as Assistant Professor of the Recording Industry and Commercial Songwriting concentration coordinator and has won numerous teaching awards including the recent 2017 Faculty Award for Distinguished Creative Activity.
