Film and Television, M.F.A.

The Master of Fine Arts in Film and Television is the first and only M.F.A. of its kind at a public university in Tennessee. Launching in Fall 2026, the M.F.A. is housed in the Department of Media Arts in the Scott Borchetta College of Media and Entertainment.
A fully on-ground, 60 credit-hour graduate degree program, the M.F.A. in Film and Television is intended for students who wish to continue their undergraduate education in film and television through graduate study, post-graduates looking to shift to film and television-oriented careers, as well as working film and television professionals who seek to shift their careers into further expansion of creative capacity. As a terminal degree in the field, the M.F.A. additionally offers graduates opportunities to obtain employment as a faculty member at the college or university level.
Our mission is to develop an innovative, highly skilled workforce primed to produce original, high-quality film and television projects that strengthen and advance the state’s entertainment industry. If you are passionate about mastering the crafts of film and television producing, writing, directing, cinematography, and editing, we invite you to explore the opportunities offered through the M.F.A. in Film and Television at MTSU.

INFORMATION

M.F.A. in Film and Television Statement on Artificial Intelligence (AI):
The film and television industry is constantly evolving, and the arrival of AI has created both challenges and opportunities for those seeking leadership roles in the industry. It is clear the industry is shifting to new models as the technology evolves. These major shifts require us to engage with technology and learn how it can both improve and harm productions

Looking ahead, we anticipate that while AI will enable productions to more efficiently achieve quality technical work, the productions of tomorrow will become even more reliant on human creativity in storytelling.

In the M.F.A. in Film and Television, we keep an eye on technological and systemic impacts of AI on the industry, while maintaining a pipeline for the development of rigorously trained creative talent. The MTSU College of Graduate Studies is actively supporting the integration of AI competency into its graduate curricula, and is providing resources to the M.F.A. to bolster these efforts.
