Mathematics, General Mathematics Concentration, B.S.

The General Mathematics concentration provides a comprehensive mathematics curriculum for students seeking to apply mathematical knowledge to another field or discipline. As such, General Mathematics majors often have a first major in science or engineering or plan to attend professional school.

General Mathematics majors develop unparalleled skills in problem solving, logical reasoning, critical thinking, and quantitative analysis. This skill set is highly valued in the US workforce: According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook (2024), the rate of job growth in mathematical occupations is much faster than average, and the median salary for a mathematical occupation is $101,460, more than twice that of all occupations.

CAREERS

Mathematics, General Mathematics Concentration, B.S.

You might be surprised by the number of careers that are supported by a mathematics major. The General Mathematics concentration is an excellent choice for students pursuing careers as

  • scientists,
  • data analysts,
  • lawyers,
  • physicians,
  • business managers,
  • engineers

In fact, the General Mathematics major is a good choice for students interested in any profession that requires complex reasoning and creative problem solving.

Mathematics as Preparation for Professional School

A General Mathematics major can help pre-med students achieve academic and professional success. Here is what The Princeton Review (2024) has to say in How to Choose a Pre-Med Major:

While math and statistics majors make up a small percentage of medical school applicants...they have the highest mean overall MCAT score and mean GPA.

Furthermore, according to the article Why Future Physicians Should Study Math, (Volume 10 page 5 of Inquiro, the UAB undergraduate science journal, 2017)...the skills you will learn as a math major are critical for physicians and medical researchers alike.

A General Mathematics major is also good preparation for law school. According to the article LSAT Scores of Economics Majors The 2008-2009 Class Update, math majors as a group earn among the highest scores on the LSAT.
