M.A.T. Program

The Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) program in the Middle Tennessee State University College of Education is designed for individuals seeking initial teacher licensure and advanced preparation for today’s diverse and evolving classrooms. The program combines rigorous coursework, clinically rich experiences, and evidence-based instructional practices to prepare educators who are student-centered, reflective, and responsive to the needs of schools and communities.

Through strong partnerships with local school districts and faculty mentorship, candidates develop the knowledge, skills, and professional dispositions necessary to support learner growth, foster inclusive learning environments, and positively impact student achievement. The M.A.T. program emphasizes instructional excellence, collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement while preparing educators to serve as Difference Makers in their schools and communities.

Secondary Education Concentration

The M.A.T. in Secondary Education concentration prepares candidates to teach within middle and high school settings while developing strong content knowledge, instructional expertise, and adolescent-centered teaching practices. Candidates learn to design meaningful learning experiences that promote critical thinking, engagement, and college- and career-readiness.

The concentration emphasizes instructional planning, assessment, classroom management, differentiation, and effective integration of technology and disciplinary literacy practices. Through supervised clinical experiences, candidates gain practical experience working with adolescent learners and develop the professional skills necessary to thrive in secondary school environments.

MTSU discloses that the Master of Education (MED) in Curriculum and Instruction, Secondary Education Licensure Path is a teacher licensure preparation program accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and approved by the Tennessee Department of Education. Admission to a teacher licensure preparation program does not guarantee that students will obtain a teacher license. Successful completion of this program meets the educational requirements to apply for a practitioner teacher licensure in Tennessee.

The MED Curriculum and Instruction, Secondary Education Licensure Path disclosure provided on MTSU’s professional licensure disclosure website indicates the states and territories where MTSU has determined, through reasonable and good faith effort, that the program does or does not meet the educational requirements for other US states and territories. Licensing authorities for each state set and enforce their own requirements and standards, which are subject to change. Current and prospective students not located in Tennessee or who plan to seek licensure or certification outside the state of Tennessee should contact the appropriate state licensing agency or board and discuss their plans with an advisor and the MTSU Office of Teacher Licensure before enrolling in the program to ensure they have the most up-to-date information and guidance regarding licensure requirements.
