Background Checks

The Office of Student Conduct is responsible for providing disciplinary information for background checks. The office must have the written consent of the individual the background check is being conducted on or proof of written consent before any information can be released. If the background check includes a request for academic information, the Office of Student Conduct will forward the form to the Registrar's Office after completing the disciplinary portion of the request. For those individuals with a disciplinary record, the information reported will include the disciplinary offense and resulting sanctions. For those individuals that do not have a disciplinary record at the institution, the information reported will indicate no disciplinary record on file.

The most common types of background checks the office handles are law school applications, government job applications, graduate school applications, and investigatory checks conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

It is important for students to understand that requests for background checks for continuing education should be submitted well in advance of the posted deadline. MTSU is not responsible for missed deadlines, mailing errors, or any other difficulty that may arise in the receipt of background checks by another institution.
