The Writer’s Loft is a creative writing program designed with the needs of writers in mind. It is our firm belief that writers learn best by actually writing, as opposed to sitting in classrooms listening to people talk about writing.
The Loft is modeled on the brief-residency MFA programs that have become so popular. As such, each fall and spring semester begins with a weekend orientation held on the MTSU campus. Students attend presentations on various aspects of the craft of writing and also meet with the mentor they'll be working with throughout the semester. The student-mentor relationship is the heart of the Writer's Loft learning model. Students have the opportunity to work one-on-one with a supportive, attentive mentor which has proven to be a stellar way to learn writing and improve one's skills. Because the program does not require weekly attendance at classes, it is ideal for busy adult learners, whether they are career people or absorbed with raising children.
The Loft’s focus is on developing the student’s skills, style, and voice as a writer in a supportive, open environment in which the student can be nurtured.
