Biography

Dr. Blake Whitman joined the School of Concrete and Construction Management as an Assistant Professor in August 2019.  Dr. Whitman attended Auburn University where he earned his Bachelor, Masters and Doctoral degrees in Civil Engineering.  He specializes in small and large-scale testing of erosion and sediment control practices used throughout land development.  He has worked as a project engineer within the private construction industry, as well as civil engineer with the U.S....

Dr. Blake Whitman joined the School of Concrete and Construction Management as an Assistant Professor in August 2019.  Dr. Whitman attended Auburn University where he earned his Bachelor, Masters and Doctoral degrees in Civil Engineering.  He specializes in small and large-scale testing of erosion and sediment control practices used throughout land development.  He has worked as a project engineer within the private construction industry, as well as civil engineer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.  As a faculty member at MTSU, he continues to provide outreach training and conduct research in the areas of erosion and sediment control materials and stormwater management.  Dr. Whitman is an Authorized OSHA 30 & 10-Hour Outreach Trainer, a Certified Professonal in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC), a licenced Private Airplane Pilot (FAA Part 61), a licenced Small Unmanned Airecraft System Pilot (FAA Part 107), and a licenced Professional Engineer (PE) in Tenneessee and Alabama.

CMT 3195 – Sustainable Construction (3) MTSU                                                                                                  

This course introduces students to the Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design (LEED) standards and the impacts associated with sustainability.  The course provides students with an opportunity to learn LEED credits and how each credit can be obtained during the design and construction process.  Upon completion of this course, student are prepared to take the LEED Green Associate Exam administered by the U.S. Green Building Council.

CMT 4000 – Soils, Foundations, and Earth Moving Equipment (3) MTSU                                                      

This course introduces students to soil mechanic fundamentals, foundations, construction planning, equipment, and methods.  The course provides students with an opportunity to learn basic soil testing processes, principles of foundation load transfer, and how to estimate equipment spreads for earth moving operations.

CMT 4160 – Construction Safety & Health Management (3) MTSU                                                                

This course covers various causes of construction accidents and the adopted strategies to prevent worksite injuries and illnesses.  Other topics covered include workers’ compensation, OSHA standards for the construction industry, economics of construction safety management, temporary structures, system safety, ergonomic applications, health hazards, and the development of a safety program.

CIM 6000 – Sustainable Concrete Construction (3) MTSU                                                                                

This course introduces sustainable construction practices to student enrolled in the Concrete Industry Management M.B.A. program offered through the Jones College of Business at Middle Tennessee State University.  The course covers green building design strategies and delivery methods.
