Research Interests

I am interested in the development and maintenance of belief.  More information is available on my research page.

The primary thrust of my research program is to understand how everyday interactions and feedback can lead to perfectly reasonable (albeit anomalous and contrary to reality) beliefs. If your sensory system delivers an experience to you, and some form of paranormal belief provides a reasonable explanation for that otherwise inexplicable experience, then belief is a perfectly reasonable response. What factors (environmental or endogenous) affect the formation and maintenance of beliefs? Wrapped up in this line of research is the relationship between belief and science. At some level, refusing to give up on a hypothesis in the face of evidence that it's wrong is not unreasonable (you can't prove a negative, and you might have done the experiment wrong). But, at the same time, continuing to believe in a hypothesis in the face of overwhelming evidence that it's wrong has a lot in common with anomalous belief systems. Can this disconnect between the constitutive values of science and actual science practice be reconciled? Belief systems play a role in science (see, e.g., Longino, 1990 for a discussion of how evidence is only evidence for a hypothesis with a belief system to connect them); do these beliefs undermine the enterprise? Should scientists cut anomalous believers a little slack? Note: My program is not to undermine faith in science with its built-in mechanisms to correct errors due to false beliefs. Rather, it would be wise for scientists to recognize what they share with everyone else. Perhaps a little honest self-reflection can help with our p-hacking problem (as one possible consequence of recognizing our common humanity).

On a related note, most anomalous beliefs are harmless or adaptive, and therefore provide no issues for the people holding them. However, some forms of misbelief are potentially damaging for the people holding them (e.g., that vaccines cause autism or that climate change is a hoax). When people have developed a consequential misbelief, what might be available to help them overcome that misbelief?

To evaluate hypotheses about the formation and maintenance of anomalous beliefs, I also conduct research on religious experiences and beliefs. Will both belief systems have similar roots in experience? Do similar variables operate in the formation and maintenance of religious and anomalous beliefs?
