Legal Studies, M.S.

Note: This program will begin in Summer 2026.

MTSU’s upcoming Master of Science in Legal Studies (M.S.L.S.) is a versatile, non-thesis program designed for business professionals and individuals seeking a deeper understanding of U.S. laws and the legal system but who will not practice law and do not require a Juris Doctor degree. Managed by MTSU’s dual AACSB-accredited Jones College of Business in collaboration with the College of Media & Entertainment and the Nashville School of Law (NSL), the program equips students with a broad understanding of the U.S. legal system.

Students complete 30 credit hours, with the initial four (4) hours offered by MTSU faculty each summer, followed by eight (8) hours taken in person at NSL and transferred to MTSU. The remaining 18 credits are offered through MTSU in flexible formats with online, in-person, or hybrid courses. No thesis is required.

Students tailor their education by selecting one of three concentrations aligned with workforce needs in Middle Tennessee:

  • Anti-Money Laundering, Fraud, and Compliance
  • Business Law
  • Entertainment Law

The program’s faculty consists of active and former judges, experienced attorneys, and legal professionals from NSL, as well as MTSU faculty with expertise in business, media, law, and government. As part of a cohort, students attend classes at NSL’s campus on Armory Oaks Drive in Nashville for part of the program and at MTSU through in-person, online, or hybrid courses across multiple disciplines. The program fosters valuable networking opportunities with instructors, law students, and other graduate students in business and professional fields.

Nashville School of Law

Nashville School of Law (NSL) is a private non-profit law school founded in 1911 that offers high-quality legal education at an affordable tuition. Classes are held exclusively at night. Most students enrolled in the School continue full-time employment, during the day, throughout their law school career. Our students are teachers, police officers, paralegals, doctors, business owners, and various professionals too numerous to list. Obtaining a J.D. at NSL requires a minimum of four years of study. The School is approved by the Tennessee Bar of Law Examiners, although not accredited by the American Bar Association. NSL graduates are practicing lawyers and judges, throughout the state of Tennessee. NSL graduates also can be found among the ranks of federal, state, and local officials, in business leadership roles, and community service positions. The School is now an integral part of Tennessee’s legal history. True to its historic mission, it continues to be a unique institution where today’s leaders of the bench and bar teach tomorrow’s lawyers. It remains a place where dreams are fulfilled, where lives are changed, and where opportunities are created.
