2021 Program Information
The Lifelong Learning Program went virtual in 2021 with a theme of “The Roaring Twenties.” Just as the 1920s offered opportunities for economic growth and new cultural developments, we are hopeful that the 2020s will do the same—except for Prohibition, of course. You can access the recordings from each session below.

Roaring to Forget: France 1919-1929
The Roaring Twenties in France, Les Années folles, were not all days and nights of jazz, banana skirts and modernist writers. France
at this time was a study in contradictions between the glitter and excitement that
brought expatriates from all over the world to Paris, and the crushing reality faced
by unemployed veterans, widows, and orphans who were forced to deal with the legacy
of the Great War.

Join musical theatre professor, Kristi Shamburger and explore John Kander and Fred
Ebb's musical, Chicago and how the "roaring twenties" and conventions of Vaudeville are used in telling
this wild tale of the 1920s!

Distilling in Tennessee: The Lasting Effects of Prohibition
This session will explore Prohibition’s lasting impact in both the distilling industry and the state of Tennessee. We will be joined by the Tennessee Distillers Guild’s Executive Director, Sara Beth Urban (B.A. History, ’11; M.A. Public History, ’13), and representatives from Cascade Hollow Distillery who will provide participants with recipes for signature drinks that can be prepared in advanced and enjoyed during the discussion. The Tennessee Distillers Guild is an organization of 31 distilleries across the state that collectively advocate for and promote the spirits industry in Tennessee. In 2017 they formed the Tennessee Whiskey Trail, a statewide attraction that draws millions of visitors each year.
