Artful Wellness: Transforming Mental Health through the Arts

The College of Liberal Arts will give students additional mental health support by hosting community resources in art therapy, music therapy, drama therapy and expressive writing therapy to show students ways they can incorporate these arts practices into their personal lives. Art, music, drama, and expressive writing therapy helps students explore their emotions and understand the conflicts that are causing their distress. If students have no way to sort out painful experiences and emotions, they suppress them, making them worse. This will be an outside tabling event with each table providing interactive opportunities for students and takeaways you can use to continue these practices on your own (journals, art supplies, etc.).

Bullying Prevention Through Kindness
A Workshop on Strategies for Future Professionals Preparing to Work with Children and Adolescents

This event will focus on how kindness can be used to help prevent bullying in children and adolescents as participants will be led through a workshop that introduces strategies and resources to help prevent bullying. In addition to learning about the Kindly app, each participant will receive a collection of free resources from the Children’s Kindness Network to help promote kindness as an antidote to bullying. These free resources will include a beautiful cuddly hand puppet (Moozie the Cow), who is the mascot for the Children’s Kindness Network. They will also receive a copy of a children’s book that promotes kindness, including a simple reader’s guide, and a copy of short preschool lesson plan created by educational experts. Refreshments will be served at the event.
Marketing in a Diverse World

With information from around the world becoming more readily accessible, it is important for students to understand the global marketplace. This event will teach students about cultural differences from around the world (e.g., gestures, colors, language translations, traditions). In addition, students will learn how these cultural differences impact marketing. As part of this event, students will be given the opportunity to try a variety of name brand food-based products from each continent (e.g., Asia, Africa, Europe, South America, Australia). Students will also engage in hands-on activities to recognize the vast amount of consumer goods they possess that are produced internationally. In order to encourage student participation, international foods, and other prizes will be provided.
Makerspace Open House

Have you ever wanted to learn more about our Makerspace? We’re happy to bring back one of our favorite events with the Makerspace Open House, brought to you in partnership with MT Engage. Join us on Wednesday evening from 5 – 7 p.m. as we feature demos from our 3D printers, podcasting studio, flight simulator, virtual reality, and so much more. Our hands-on activities will include our Sphero Robot obstacle course again and this year we will introduce our build a Rube Goldberg machine station. In addition to all of this, our staff will be on hand to answer questions about how to get started and the best ways to utilize the equipment. We hope to see you there!
The Walker Library Makerspace is an active learning environment for students, faculty, and staff to use technology to participate in experiential project-based learning. The value of the Makerspace experience is in innovation and access — the creation of new solutions to problems using technology that is accessible to all, despite academic discipline or focus.
Hands on Workshop: Cemetery Preservation
Presented by MTSU Center for Historic Preservation

Old City Cemetery, Murfreesboro
This hands-on workshop will teach MTSU students techniques and best practices for cemetery preservation, including what you can and cannot do in cemeteries and how best to clean tombstones. It is modeled on the Center for Historic Preservation’s popular community-focused cemetery workshops, which are largely aimed at amateur preservationists and graduate students. Participants will spend the first hour of the workshop at the Heritage Center of Murfreesboro and Rutherford County, where you will learn best practices and other pertinent information to prepare for the hands-on portion to follow. The rest of the workshop (10 AM-12 PM) will take place at the Old City Cemetery where you will use professional tombstone cleaning supplies (provided by the Center for Historic Preservation and MT Engage) to properly clean the historic tombstones. Upon completion of the workshop, students will receive a special cemetery preservation button to mark your training in cemetery preservation.

The Banned Books Campus Tour will take the James E. Walker Library beyond the physical walls of the building to engage students across campus in conversations about free expression and censorship while providing them with access to a variety of relevant resources that have been selected by fellow students. Students will have the ability to access resources, engage with displays/events/programming, collaborate, create/make, and share ideas. This event will also highlight the endless possibilities that can be found in a modern academic library and help them understand it has the power to transform their learning journey at MTSU.

MTSU’s premier elevator pitch competition! Each student will have five minutes to give their 30 to 90-second elevator pitch with feedback from our judges. Each participant will receive a T-shirt and the top three cash prizes. $300 for 1st, $200 for 2nd, and $100 for 3rd.

This event will showcase all that the COE has to offer, from programs and student engagement opportunities to work and meeting spaces. During the fair, students will have the opportunity to engage in activities as well as to learn more about the various COE programs and services. Throughout the fair, students will be invited to explore the various community spaces available to them, such as the HUB, various study spaces, and the 2nd floor service counter. Let Freedom Read: A Banned Books Week Event

This event will include selected readings from banned books along with discussion protocols empowering attendees to think critically about the books being banned and why. During the event, leaders will use resources provided by National Banned Books week and ALA (https://bannedbooksweek.org/resources/handbook/) such as, trivia games, videos, and hand outs. This event will include tools and resources for educators, parents, and advocates to engage in discussion about censorship and its impact. Door prizes and bookmarks will be provided. All attendees will walk away with at least two banned books.
