James Union Building

The James Union Building is named for Clayton L. James, recognizing his forty-eight years of service to education in Tennessee, including serving as the first Dean of Students. Although superbly proficient in all of the social science disciplines, his most enduring and endearing fame came as a matchless preceptor in Sociology. His artistry in teaching, compassion, and humanity left an incredible imprint on literally hundreds of University students.

The James Union Building houses a variety of offices and facilities, including the Raider Zone Grill, the Faculty Senate Office, the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies.

The 6,400 square foot Tennessee Ballroom is available to reserve for your next event and can accommodate up to 700 attendees.
