About NSSE

The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) is a nationally recognized survey that helps colleges and universities understand how students engage academically and socially. Administered by the Indiana University Survey Research Center on behalf of the NSSE Institute, the survey is widely used to assess the quality of the undergraduate experience and to support institutional planning and improvement.

NSSE measures how students spend their time on learning and educational activities, as well as how effectively the university supports their engagement. Student feedback provides valuable insight into the effectiveness of academic programs, peer-to-peer relationships, campus services, and learning opportunities. At MTSU, survey results are used as part of the university’s continuous improvement efforts to enhance the overall student experience.

In addition to providing MTSU with its survey results, the NSSE Institute prepares customized reports that compare MTSU students’ experiences with those of students at similar institutions across the country. The Institute also publishes an annual national report highlighting trends in student engagement and effective educational practices.

Your feedback provides valuable insight into what is working well and where improvements are needed in academics, campus services, and the overall student experience.

MTSU compares student responses with those from similar colleges and universities across the country. These comparisons help university leaders, faculty, and staff identify opportunities to strengthen academic programs, student support services, and campus initiatives. By identifying and addressing areas for improvement, MTSU can better support student success and enhance the overall educational experience.

What is student engagement?

Student engagement refers to how actively students participate in learning and other meaningful educational experiences. It includes the time and effort students invest in their studies, involvement in campus activities, and use of available learning resources.

Student engagement also reflects how effectively the university supports learning by providing high-quality programs, services, and opportunities that encourage participation. Decades of research show that students who are actively engaged in their education are more likely to learn, persist, and succeed in college.
