FROM PRESIDENT MCPHEE: Notice of Intent of Waiver to Rename Forrest Hall

To the University community,

We posted today public notice of our intention to again petition the Tennessee Historical Commission for a waiver that would allow us to rename Forrest Hall, the building that houses our Army ROTC detachment.

You may recall that our Board of Trustees, at its meeting of Sept. 14, 2021, voted unanimously to support my desire to remove the name of Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest from the structure, which I feel distracts from the values, goals and priorities that we share as a modern, inclusive and comprehensive university.

I wrote this column for The Tennessean in August 2021, which conveys my feelings on the need for this change. You can read the public notice and learn about our previous efforts to change the name at www.mtsu.edu/forresthall.

Sincerely,
Dr. Sidney A. McPhee
President
