About Us

We are professors at Middle Tennessee State University who have been working together to cultivate the “speaking fluent research” idea. This is the idea that learning to do research has many similarities to learning “to do” (read, write, speak) a new or foreign language and learning to function effectively within a culture that speaks that language. Our collaboration has capitalized on our varied research interests and extensive teaching experiences. In particular, we have spent many years teaching either research or Japanese (to beginning, advanced, undergraduate and graduate students). Working together, we have found many parallels between the teaching and learning of research and teaching and learning a new or foreign language.
