We are requesting the replacement of 22 electronic pianos in the School of Music that are worn, obsolete or broken instruments. There are a total of 28 digital pianos that students use continuously, in practice rooms or in the electronic Piano Lab (SFA 212). Over the years the School of Music's budget has not been able to keep up with the replacement schedule of these pianos or their repair. Repairs to these instruments can run in the hundreds of dollars; repair is often not cost effective, and many of the pianos are obsolete and are unable to be repaired at all. Our plans are to replace all 13 instruments in the Piano Lab, for teaching consistency. Four of the newer instruments already in the Lab will be moved into practice rooms and the remainder of the purchase will replace worn instruments in various practice rooms. We would like to purchase durable mid-priced instruments (selected below) because of their sturdiness in the face of heavy and continuous use. Benefit to students: All 330+ undergraduate music majors are required to pass a piano proficiency and take two or four semesters of different levels of class piano; the Piano Lab is used for this instruction, and students prepare for their classes in the practice rooms. In addition, non-music majors also take some sections of class piano and use the electronic pianos in practice rooms for various kinds of music making. Thank you for your consideration .
