Sociology and Anthropology: renovate PH 300, our newly acquired master classroom (traded with English for seating efficiency purposes). This English managed classroom, a master classroom with older technology, was traded for PH 319. Classes that were originally scheduled for PH 319 will now be scheduled in PH 300 so we can anticipate similar enrollments of 950-1000 in a typical AY. These numbers were furnished in part from Watson Harris' office. These enrollments include 14-15 classes from Sociology and another 9-10 from other departments such as English, Social Work, and Theater. Having management and the experience of a renovated master classroom will benefit students in general education, lower and upper division classes who increasingly expect and faculty who increasingly include a variety of new and innovative technologies in their pedagogy. FLL: 22 iPads. With voice and handwriting recognition capabilities, iPad is ideal for teaching such scripting languages as Chinese, Arabic and Japanese, where handwriting characters or Arabic alphabet is an important part of learning the languages. With iPad, rather than paper and pen, it’s possible to let students practice handwriting where automatic correction and suggestions can be made—important for students at the early stage of languages acquisition (they can also handwrite an unknown word and look it up in a digital dictionary). Also, iPad's voice recognition capability gives students more opportunities in speaking practice. The 22 iPads will be housed in BDA 303A and used in classroom instruction, as well as, available for individual use in the foreign language lab.
