Equip three classrooms (KOM 200, 202, 225) with Smart Board technology and mathematics software. Being expected to use it on the job, preservice mathematics teachers require training with this technology. Some two dozen courses and 700+ students in bachelors, masters and doctoral programs will utilize this technology every year. Directors of MST and MSE programs have joined in this request— MSE Director Dr. Angela Barlow: I am writing in support of the Department of Mathematical Sciences’ request for funding to purchase smartboards. Currently, the Department of Mathematical Sciences does not have smartboards in any classroom, which places our preservice teachers in mathematics education at a severe disadvantage. Smartboards are readily found in K-12 mathematics. Preservice teachers are expected to enter these classrooms and not only be able to use the technology but also to do so in a way that supports the engagement of students in the learning process … Providing smartboards to the Department of Mathematical Sciences will enable mathematics education faculty to work with preservice teachers on developing an understanding of the capabilities of this unique technological tool for positively impacting student achievement. MST Director Dr. Michaele Chappell: One thing I will say: I'm seeing more-n-more MIDDLE and HIGH schools having some type of "smartboard" … The Interns have to speed through the learning curve ... It's unfortunate that our students' first encounter with the technology is when they're out in the schools - which is what some of the Interns mentioned this semester.
