This proposal requests fund to purchase two computers as well as other multimedia hardware and software so that two faculty members can develop and conduct technology-enhanced courses in foreign language instruction. Dr. Roy Shelton is currently converting his Medical Vocabulary course into a distance-learning format under the request of Continuing Education. Specifically, he needs (1) to relate the etymological study of medical terms to fundamental anatomy through graphic representations, and (2) to provide extensive on-line drills in the correct pronunciation of polysyllabic medical terms. Developing the course along those lines will involve creating, editing and storing both graphics and sound files; hence a considerably higher processor speed and much more hard disk storage than what he currently has at his disposal. Dr. Jun Da is actively developing multimedia-enabled materials for the Instructional Technology in Foreign Language Education graduate course. To teach the course effectively, he needs (1) to demonstrate in classroom the authoring and use of multimedia materials in foreign language instruction; and (2) to experiment with new technologies so that students can be trained accordingly. However, he does not have the necessary multimedia software and hardware at his disposal to meet both instructional goals at this moment.
