Replacement of Existing Technology
In the past 6 months, the current cart has had to be repaired multiple times with one of the major components having to be completely replaced. The current system does not allow for testing of pediatric or adolescent populations. Of additional concern is that we are unable to validate the system to determine its true accuracy. Undergraduate, masters, and especially doctoral student course work and research are dependent on a functional metabolic cart. The requested system represents more advanced, student-friendly technology, which can handle a higher volume of testing. The ensuing Ph.D. conversion mandates the ability to sustain and conduct quality research that is not currently possible on the old system. The current system is not reliable and cannot be used to conduct publishable quality research.

The requested equipment is used to quantify energy expenditure during resting and exercise conditions. This system allows for the measurement of oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production. In the exercise science lab, the equipment is used to assess the amount of energy used during walking, cycling, and running. It also allows for the determination of resting metabolic rate, or the number of calories an individual uses at rest. The MOXUS system is used in conducting maximal oxygen consumption tests or testing an individual's capacity for and response to maximal exercise loads. This equipment will be beneficial to students in several classes offered through the HPERS Department. In addition to course work, this system will be employed in student research endeavors. The equipment is invaluable at the masters and doctoral levels where students pursue in- depth study of the physiological processes associated with exercise. The requested equipment will be used in the following courses: PHED 424/524, PHED 481, PHED 483, PHED 665, PHED 684, PHED 683. Annual enrollment for these courses is 430.
