This proposal will replace 8 recording studio/lab computers which are 4 years beyond their scheduled TAF replacement date. These computers are the pivotal means of sustaining 24-hour x 7-day multi-track recording and mixing operations during a given semester, and are definitively crucial to accomplishing classroom instruction and student lab assignments. Accordingly, the data processing demands of high-definition multi-track recording and playback necessitates a robust platform, and the current, aging computers are demonstrating failures and characteristics which reflect questionable stability and reliability, as well as requiring mounting maintenance costs. Consequently, each computer is a potential single point of failure for successful instruction and assignment accomplishment, and such a failure in a single studio or lab could impact learning for as many as 240 students in several undergraduate and graduate courses. To be proactive for this scenario, this proposal also includes a spare computer which can serve as a curriculum-saving stop-gap measure. The department will accept partial funding for this project if necessary.
