The Department of Recording Industry has two pianos in recording studios A and B which are long past their scheduled replacement (20 years). This proposal is to replace one of the two pianos. The piano in Studio B has been in service since the early 80s and has reached the point that it is no longer usable. Recently, the piano technician who tunes the pianos stated that the piano could not be tuned and its condition was so bad that it could not be repaired. It is therefore un-usable. Studios A and B are used by students in Recording Industry and the Masters of Fine Arts in Recording Arts and Technologies (over 1000 students total). Students in the M.F.A. program have had to rent pianos or go to commercial recording studios to complete projects that include acoustic piano. The department regularly invites professional artists, songwriters, and musicians to campus to perform in our facilities. This brings visibility to the entire university and is a valuable experience for students. The condition of our pianos prevent us from doing this with songwriters who play piano or professional pianists. As piano is such a common instrument, this severely limits the types of music that can be recorded in the studios. If necessary, the department will accept partial funding for this project.
