The Department of Recording Industry's piano in Studio B is long past the schedule replacement of 20 years. This proposal is to replace the piano with a new piano (Yamaha C7 with disklavier preferred). The piano in Studio B has been in service since the early 80s and has reached the point that it is difficult to keep in tune and has a very poor tone. This severely limits the usability of the instrument. Studio B is used by students in Recording industry and the M.F.A. in Recording Arts and Technologies programs (over 1000 students total). Graduate students have had to rent pianos or go to commercial recording studios to complete projects with acoustic piano. The department regularly invites professional artists, songwriters, and musicians to campus to perform in our facilities. This brings visibility to the university and is a valuable experience for students. A new piano will help to support these events. The disklavier option allows for performances on the piano to be captured and recreated at a later date. This will have significant educational benefits allowing students to practice recording the instrument without having to hire a pianist for practice. If necessary, the department will accept partial funding for this project.
